
Art work inspired by the many cultures, landscapes and materials of the African Continent.
A reception was held for the opening of the Out of Africa exhibition presented by Blue Door Gallery at 13 Riverdale Ave, Yonkers. Close to 200 people attended, including State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Yonkers Council President, Chuck Lesnick and Majority Leader Pat McDow. A certificate of merit was presented to Bob Miller, President of Weshab for his efforts in revitalizing Yonkers. The exhibit features artists who are either from or are inspired by the African Continent. The exhibition continues through March 13, 2011.

The exhibition included vivid images depicting life in Morocco, South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria as
well as photographs illustrating the energy of contemporary African American culture. Osi Audu evokes the spirit
of Africa in conceptual pieces; contemporary ceramic vessels by Catie Newman draw upon traditional African forms and
symbols. The diversity of the continent was represented in the wild life paintings of Alison Nicholls. This powerful
show touched upon all aspects of African culture and truly represents the spirit and diversity of the continent.
Blue Door Gallery is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT exhibition and performance space. We are the only gallery in
Downtown Yonkers and are proving to be an educational and inspirational presence for our community. |
