About Blue Door Gallery
Blue Door Gallery has the opportunity to showcase accomplished and emerging artists with unusual or experimental vision.
Artists and writers find a supportive environment in the gallery's intimately scaled exhibition space. It's really about them; their approaches and inspirations, their techniques and material, all of which is shared with the public.
We invite talent of all kinds to fully participate in all the gallery's activities. Our exhibitions, workshops, Open Mics, and performances have made Blue Door an outstanding cultural and educational resource in Yonkers and the Tri-State region.
History of Organization
The
Blue Door Artist Association was founded in the fall of 2002. Its founders were former directors and
staff members of Art on Main
Street/Yonkers, a community-based arts organization and gallery that had an
important presence in Yonkers, for more than seven years.
The
mission of the Blue Door Artist Association is to bring the arts to local
communities throughout Westchester, especially those that are underserved by
cultural organizations. We do this
through exhibitions, public art projects, children’s programs, workshops and
special events.
In
March 2009, The Association opened Blue
Door Gallery as one of its main projects, and has had many widely attended
and critically acclaimed exhibitions. In addition, the association has organized
numerous exhibitions throughout Downtown Yonkers in venues such as the Yonkers
Riverfront Library, Philipse Manor Hall, the Downtown/Waterfront BID, Beczak
Environmental Education Center as well as in stores and lobbies.
In
2005, The Blue Door Artist Association began several public art projects. With
the support of ArtsWestchester, the
City of Yonkers and New York
State legislative grants, the Association has worked with local artists to
create murals and decorate concrete planters and receptacles in Southwest and
Downtown Yonkers. Since 2007, the Association has been arranging the
installation of outdoor sculptures, made by local and regional artists around
Yonkers City Hall and at the Yonkers Waterfront.
In
the last four years The Association has initiated a number of programs for
Yonkers youth, including poetry readings and workshops at the gallery and at
local street festivals. In 2007, with the support of Domino Sugar, the Yonkers
Green Wall project was completed. Over 100 students from five high schools
created murals on global warming that have been displayed in various outdoor
locations in Downtown Yonkers.
The
Association has now grown and reorganized as one of five divisions under the
new BLUE DOOR ART CENTER, which includes Blue Door Gallery, Blue Door Art
School, Museum of Contemporary Art Yonkers, and the Yonkers Film Festival, an
international film festival with film showings and workshops at the Yonkers
Riverfront Library.
